It's the end of an era. One in which Hip Hoppers in Los Angeles (and all of So Cal) can go and get their dose of culture from their staple of Hip Hop: Fat Beats. I remember going to the spot on Vermont (across from Pedro's Grill) where I would school myself on new underground releases and thinking it was dope seeing cats like Babu and Rhettmatic. Then once the move was made to Melrose, I remember getting hype about Jupitersciples product being sold.
Fat Beats has been BP & ODDS platform for selling music to our peoples. Most recently, Fat Beats was on deck exclusively with our 12". The feeling of having your independent 12" on the wall amongst the greats, is something I won't soon forget. Big up the whole Fat Beats family. Thanks for holding down Los Angeles Hip Hop for so many years.

That past Saturday was a busy day. We headed over to MZA's crib where he and his team record Soul Circle Radio live. Before we got started with that interview, BP and I hopped on the phone with Flying Bee of Fusion Radion (WIIT FM in Chicago) for an interview we booked a few months prior. big up Rebels to The Grain who gave us the heads up about Flying Bee's show, and how they support dope up-and-coming artists. BROKEN BUTTONS...

Recording for the new album "VACANCY" is underway. A couple more beats and a new project will be available for download. So far things have gone smoothly with making the beats until the most important buttons on the MPC broke. Shift & Program. This has happened more than a few times in the past.

The thing that sucks about using hardware is that parts are becoming scarce. I found an internet site that sold buttons but they were based in the U.K. I had only one other option. I drove out to studio city to visit the man...Bruce Forat.

I paid $4 for each button. It was easy to replace. Took about 5 minutes...

I really need to stock up on a bag of these things. Im sure all the software heads get a kick outta seeing us go thru all this.

Recently BP & ODDS were at the Grandstar Jazz club holding down double duties. BP laid some drums down for the beautiful sounds of Beautiful Kalamari (Blue Key Coretet + Pryvet Peepsho) while ODDS hosted with DJ Analog holding down the decks. It was just another night with the fam for the duo. Big ups to Vic (Bokeh Bunny) for the pics!

Wax is crucial...point blank. Especially when everybody has cd's and mp3's; having wax is a way to separate ourselves from the rest. Having a 12" is just another benchmark for us. I took a trip to see Rick from Rainbo records today to submit our music:

The vinyl will feature 4 songs from THE MEDIUM: The Plan, Ultra-Magnetics, The Gift and Time is Change. Vocals on the A-side, Instrumentals on the flip. We aren't trying to change the game with this one, just trying to keep it alive.

Rainbo Records has a rich musical history. They've pressed up wax for countless artists. I actually just got off the phone today with Marvski and he was talkin' about seeing original Planet Rock and Stetsasonic 12"s there back in the day. He was breakin' down some science behind this historical vinyl plant....so for us to go here and get our music pressed up, it was a no-brainer...Big-ups to Rick for all the help. Stay tuned for the test presses.

It was a cool drive down to Daygo (as the locals call it), during which we assembled yet another "Plan" to further this fully independent machine.
We arrived at the spot to watch the cats from Beat Rock do they thangs. (big up Bwan, CounterParts, DJs Fatgums and Tanner)
we set up and caught wreck real quick. you can catch some snippets of the songs performed below. the highlight for me (ODDS) was holding up a Jupitersciples still-shrink-wrapped "Snapped Faders and Blown Speaker Milkshakes" cassette tape when I heard a voice from the crowd (big up Indovisuals of SD [hope spelling's correct]) yell out "Carpal Tunnelin Operatives!"

That was a good night. We were most satisfied with how our set turned out. Unfortunately, we don't have any footage, but check the pics below. On a Thursday night, the BP&ODD-ience was well in attendance with faces I hadn't seen in years (peace to DJ Lime Green). With 2 DAYS unitl THE MEDIUM drops, we're feeling confident after a satisfying release party last night at The FLYBALL. The evening started with Beautiful Kalamari (Pryvet Peepsho: turntables, Lord Vince: Nord and Roland Juno) killin it live with the help of buttonpusha on the mpc providing drums. HEAT! I hope somebody recorded it. And before the BP & ODDS set began, the homie DJ ENDO blessed the decks filling up the dance floor and getting the crowd live.
Much thanks and love to the fam and supporters of BP & ODDS who got laced up with some dope BLOODBATH giveaways during the set. Gotta big up BP & ODDS partner in crowd control, HAHK2 for setting the hype tone of the set. and to the BP & ODD-ience: the only difference is... THE MEDIUM!!!

We just lost another member of the global hip hop family. The one and only Grand Master Roc Raida of the Xecutionerz. The cause of his death is still a little unclear but one thing for sure is that we lost another legend way too early. 2009 has been a rough year. Mike Nardone retires We Came From Beyond

Damn! Los Angeles has its share of long-running hiphop mix shows on the radio like Melo-D on Julio G's show, The Baka Boyz Friday Night Flavas, Fantastic Four's Fantastic Four Show, Divine Forces, and The Wake Up Show to name the well-known joints... but the longest running, truest-to-Los Angeles underground hiphop radio show was retired on August 30th of this year. The show I'm talking about is Mike Nardone's We Came From Beyond on LA's KXLU broadcasting from LMU's campus. Mike Nardone retired the show after more than 20 years of faithful service to the Los Angeles community. Real Los Angeles underground hiphop on the FM dial? I'm sorry to see it go and am sorry to have missed the last show live... but we can always check the archive of shows at www.wecamefrombeyond.com
